Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Several parts of Delhi registered an AQI exceeding 500, which equals 10x the healthy level recommended by the WHO.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe limits.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that covers the metropolis as winter begins.

Yet recently, the recently formed local government petitioned the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and environment".

Legal Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, the court agreed to the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout the capital registered air quality peaking around late evening to some of the worst readings observed during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also initiated a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the festivities.

Chronic Environmental Issue

Alarmingly severe concentrations of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near Diwali, the amount of toxic particulate matter in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Various Contamination Contributors

The problem in the city is attributed to a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the city as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million people calling home the Delhi area is significant, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can even lead to cancer.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 early fatalities each year in the capital.
